General Tips on Caring for Your Orchids

BlogCaring Tips

Orchids are beautiful flowers but many people are scared to have them because they don’t know how to care for them. Today, we want to help you get rid of that fear by sharing some helpful tips on caring for orchids. They are not so hard to take care of once you understand them.

Watering – Orchids have specific watering needs. It is best to read the instructions that come with your orchid.

However, there is a general rule you can follow. You should water your orchid every 10 to 12 days. Dip the roots into a bucket or sink so it can absorb the water. Make sure that it is properly drained before putting it back in its pot.

Pots – It is good practice to keep your orchids in pots that have smaller drainage holes. It is also wise to re-pot them every 18 to 24 months. Make sure the soil you use is the right kind. Ask your local nursery for advice if you are unsure.

Sunlight – Orchids like sunlight, but they don’t like direct sunlight. Place your orchid in an area where it can experience the sunlight without it burning or drying out.

Plant food – Orchids should be given plant food once a month. The best fertilizers are those that contain nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, and trace elements. This food will help your orchid stay healthy, grow properly, and last longer.

Cutting – After the blooms fade, you should cut the spike down to ½ inch. This will enable it to grow again when the time is right.

Placement – Avoid placing the orchid next to a fruit bowl as the fruit release gases that are harmful to the orchid and will make it die. Also, avoid placing the orchid in a draft, direct sunlight, or very warm conditions. Ensure that there is good air circulation in the area where you decide to keep your orchid.

Now you don’t have to be afraid of that gift orchid anymore. Embrace its beauty and take good care of it.
